Kathryn Haley launched Centenary College (N.J.) off with a bang at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championships when her cool round won the individual open equitation over fences class.

Haley, 19, rode in the second class of the day in Raleigh, N.C., on MyDis, brought to the competition by Hollins University (Va.).

Galloping around a jump course or navigating a dressage pattern under the nighttime lights in the huge International Arena during the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Fla., can feel a bit daunting for veteran riders.

For many of the 21 athletes who rode in the third annual WEF Collegiate Equitation Challenge on Feb. 10, simply being at this prestigious show was a first-time experience. Throw in the pressure of being the sole person chosen to represent your college’s varsity equestrian team at the event, and you end up with more than a few cases of butterflies.

This small college in Michigan encourages students on the riding team to value community service as much as blue ribbons.

What happens when you encourage a determined and accomplished group of collegiate-level equestrians to give back to their community? At Albion College in Albion, Mich., you get almost $1,000 raised to fight cancer during a Relay For Life event on Nov. 19.
