A group of veterinarians and riders affiliated with the University of Bern (Switzerland) are interested in improving horse health and safety. They’re studying collapse and sudden death in horses in order to design strategies to prevent these episodes. 

If you’ve ridden, trained or treated a horse that collapsed or died during or near exercise they’re hoping you’ll fill out a questionnaire. 

Barns in both Iowa and Illinois have reported EHV-1 outbreaks and are currently under quarantine.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship confirmed several cases of equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy, a strain of EHV-1, in Warren County on May 13. The affected horses are located in Warren County and are currently under quarantine.

A 5-year-old horse in Westampton, N.J. was euthanized on Feb. 14 after testing positive for equine herpes myeloencephalopathy.

The horse exhibited severe neurologic symptoms, including right facial paralysis, stumbling, and loss of front and rear muscle control. These are typical of EHM, which is a strain of equine herpes virus-1.
