Fédération Equestre Internationale officials announced Nov. 10 that they have opened a case against Irish show jumper Kevin Thornton for alleged abuse of the horse Flogas Sunset Cruise, who died on Oct. 10 during the GPA Jump Festival CSI** in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France.
The 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse (ARD VDL Douglas—PH Cruise Hill, Cruising), owned by the rider and Vinnie Duffy, dropped dead after Thornton exercised him on the track.
Irish show jumping rider Kevin Thornton is being accused of abuse after a horse, Flogas Sunset Cruise, died during the GPA Jump Festival CSI** in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France.
The organizers of the competition released a paper statement to other riders at the event on Oct. 10. The competition has banned Thornton from further participation.
Following an incident in the warm-up ring at the Longines FEI World Cup Show Jumping Final (Sweden), the Fédération Equestre Internationale announced it’s not taking action against French rider Penelope Leprevost.
The Fédération Equestre Internationale confirmed the suspension of two officials, international judge Rogier van Iersel and course designer Rob Jansen, following the first leg of the inaugural Global Champions League in Miami Beach, Fla.
An FEI spokesperson confirmed: “The FEI has applied its rules relating to unsanctioned events and can confirm that the two officials are ineligible. FEI officials will not be authorized to officiate in any capacity at FEI and national events for a period of six months.”
David O’Connor came to the rescue as riders and stakeholders reached a deadlock with Fédération Equestre Internationale representatives over the proposals to reduce teams to three riders with no drop score, as one of the key mechanisms for remaining in the Olympic Games.
