Are you among the zillions snowed in this weekend? After you get back in from trying to push a wheelbarrow through thigh-high drifts, bring that stack of old bridles that needs cleaning inside and knock it off while you watch some of the Chronicle staff’s all-time favorite video clips.

For most riders, winning a grand prix would be the main focus of their day. But for Andy Kocher, his time in the show ring is a short respite between selling horses. Lucky for him, he’s gotten quite good at both.

Glancing down the list of entries from USEF Pony Finals, there are lots of recurring themes. Some are sweet, some are funny and some are just surprising. Here are some of our favorite pony names popping up on the jumbotrons in Lexington, Ky., by theme.

So many horsemen I admire learned to ride by the seat of their pants across fields or in backyards before civilizing their seats with formal instruction. In this day and age that’s much rarer, with society growing more litigious and more top riders than ever hailing from major cities. I’m a product of this trend, growing up in a non-horsey urban area. I learned to ride at the end of a longe line and in a ring, eventually showing hunters under the guidance of excellent horsemen who did their best to impart good horsemanship as well as correct position and style onto me.
