It’s a word Larry Glefke doesn’t use often, but it aptly described Kelley Farmer’s round aboard Baltimore in the opening round of the USHJA International Hunter Derby Championship.

“Flawless,” Glefke said, shaking his head. “I never say this—I usually have a lot to say when she comes out of the ring, but that was flawless.”

Parker, Colo.—July 10

Just how good is Kelley Farmer? Just ask her partner at Lane Change Farm, Larry Glefke. After he’s done extolling the praises of Mindful, who just notched another major derby win at Summer In The Rockies V, and Symbolic, who took second, he has multiple statistics at the ready.

June 6—San Juan Capistrano, Calif.

Most people heading into an open hunter classic would put their money on an experienced competitor, but green horses ruled the day at the third $25,000 WCHR West Coast Spectacular. John Bragg piloted Social Hour to the top of the two-round class just seven months after that horse landed stateside for the first time. John French finished right on his heels with Boss, who’s also just out of the pre-green ranks.

March 28—Wellington, Fla.

Kelley Farmer and Mindful topped Round 1 of the $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby today at the Winter Equestrian Festival. The 2014 Chronicle of the Horse Hunter Horse of the Year earned matching scores of 90 and topped all the high option fences on their way to the top of Round 1. She has a 10-point lead over Say When and Canadian Darcy Hayes, with Tori Colvin riding Heritage Farms’ Vaillero into third.

March 6—Gulfport, Miss.

Martien van der Hoeven only came to Gulfport, Miss., for one week this winter, but he made it worth his while when he rode Cellino to the top of today’s $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby.

That derby specialist spends most of his time in a paddock and enjoying light hacks in a field at home, only getting his mane braided when there’s a big derby on the schedule. And today Cellino’s experience came in handy today, helping him top the field of 35 to take the blue for Julie Thompson.
