Gordon Grenville Smith, passionate foxhunter and entrepreneur, died on Sept. 21 of injuries sustained while foxhunting. He was 71.

Mr. Smith, Casanova, Va., graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture before going on to receive an MBA from the Wharton School (Pa.). He then served in the Army National Guard for four years as a paratrooper. Later, he owned and operated Smith Recreational Vehicles in Branchburg, N.J.

Debbie Miller Atkinson, successful and passionate event rider, died Sept. 30 in Nashville, Tenn. Ms. Atkinson suffered an eventing accident on Sept. 2, 2006, and sustained a spinal cord injury that left her quadriplegic. After her accident, Ms. Atkinson dedicated her energy and support to the Equestrian Aid Foundation, which helped with her assisted care for the past two years.

Dinwiddie Lampton Jr., passionate equestrian, jockey and four-in-hand driver, died Sept. 25 at his home in Lexington, Ky. He was 94.

Mr. Lampton was the longtime president of American Life & Accident Insurance Co., the company that his father started. He graduated from Culver Military Academy (Ind.) and attended St. John’s College (Md.) until his father called him home to work at the insurance company.

Jean Hansen Stirling, avid horsewoman and accomplished show rider, died on Sept. 30 in Hollywood, Fla. She was 89.

Mrs. Stirling was born in New Jersey and spent her youth in Pittsburgh, Pa. She graduated from Winchester Thurston School in Pittsburgh and Principia College (Ill.). She married William Stirling Jr., and lived in the Pennsylvania towns of Bakerstown and Ligonier before relocating to Florida.


Cameo, an accomplished international event horse, was euthanized Aug. 5 in Blacksburg, Va., due to a large tumor obstructing his airway. He was 19.

Originally an advanced-level horse based in California with Debbie Peacock, Cameo’s international career began after he was purchased by Abigail Lufkin.

The pair finished third at Fair Hill CCI*** (Md.) in 1999, 13th at the Rolex Kentucky CCI**** in 2000 and were short-listed for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
