Road To The Olympics

Since being named to the U.S dressage team, Laura Graves has utilized some time away from the competition ring to focus on the details with Verdades since trainer Debbie McDonald has been on hand at the farm in Belgium for some last-minute assistance.

Since we last checked in with Kasey Perry-Glass and Goerklintgaards Dublet, they competed at the CDIO***** at Rotterdam (the Netherlands) where the U.S. team finished second in the Nations Cups. The pair was originally slated to ride in the CDI**** at Aachen (Germany), but after some lower than average scores (74.58 percent in the Grand Prix and 71.76 percent in the Special) Perry-Glass elected to skip it and go back to the drawing board.

Clark Montgomery and Loughan Glen traveled from their base in England to The Plains, Va., in early July to compete at the Land Rover U.S. eventing team’s final preparatory outing at the Land Rover Great Meadow International CICO***. They won the division and led the U.S. team to a Nations Cup victory

Laura Graves and Verdades tacked up for their first show since the winter season in the CDIO5* at Compiègne, France. There, they finished second behind teammates Kasey Perry-Glass and Goerklintgaards Dublet in the CDIO5* Nations Cup Grand Prix. They’ll compete in the Roosendaal CDI4* (the Netherlands) held June 1-5 and then will compete in the mandatory observation event at Rotterdam (the Netherlands).

Clark Montgomery had a great outing with Loughan Glen at The Dodson & Horrell Chatsworth International Horse Trials CIC*** on May 14-15 where they finished ninth against some tough company, but his week took a sad turn as his groom Karen Hughes died after a battle with cancer on May 16.

Karen was amazing. She worked right up until she just absolutely couldn’t, which was about five weeks ago. She literally just could not come in to work. We wanted her to do whatever she wanted to do, and coming to work every day is what kept her going this long.

After a successful winter in Florida, HH Azur is getting some well-deserved downtime at Castle Hill, Ward’s Brewster, N.Y., base, before departing for Europe to contest the designated observation events for the U.S. Olympic Show Jumping Team. Meanwhile, Ward is showing at the nearby Old Salem Farm (N.Y.) spring shows.

Another Rolex Kentucky CCI**** is in Phillip Dutton’s rearview mirror, with some top finishes for his three horses: Mighty Nice placed fourth, Fernhill Cubalawn took fifth, and Fernhill Fugitive placed 13th.

Any rider would be thrilled to finish that many horses in the top 20 at Rolex, and Dutton is pleased with the result, but he’s not any rider. He has things he wants to fix and improve upon, particularly the show jumping phase, where Fernhill Fugitive pulled an uncharacteristic five rails, and no ride was without jumping penalties.
